Clarksville

Clarksville was formed from Cuba on May 11, 1835.  It is located on the west border of the county, south of the center.

The first settlement was made a little south of the center, in 1822, by John and Horation Slayton from Warsaw, Wyoming county.  James McDougal, from Steuben county, settled a little east of the center and Jabez Survey near the same place, in 1827.  The first child born was Joseph P. Slayton in 1826.  The first marriage was Van Rensselaer Delivan and Harriet Palmer in 1827.   The first death was Mrs. Sally Olds in 1831.  The first school was taught by Mariah McDougal, east of the center in 1827.  Daniel S. Carpenter kept the first inn, near the center in 1828.  Samuel King erected the first sawmill on Dodge Creek in 1832.  The first religious meeting (Methodist Episcopal) was held at the house of Nelson Hoyt, in 1828, by Rev. Mr. Cole, from Friendship.   The first church (Baptist) was organized by Rev. Holden E. Presser in 1842.  [Source: J.H.French, Gazetteer of State of New York, 1860]
