Vital Statistics -  Registration of vital statistics in New York state began in 1880.   By 1890 most of the counties were compliying with the law and recording deaths; by 1915 most counties were recording births. It is best to obtain a certificate from the town or village clerk where the event occurred.    Addresses of the town clerks are located on each of the respective town pages.
